About Black Legacy Homeowners (BLHN)
Our Mission
Black Legacy Homeowners is dedicated to empowering and supporting Black residents in the Seattle-Tacoma region to achieve, sustain, and pass down homeownership. We believe that a home is more than just shelter; it is the cornerstone of community stability and the most powerful tool for creating generational wealth.
The Challenge We Face
For decades, discriminatory housing practices—from redlining to racially restrictive covenants—have intentionally stripped wealth from Black families. Today, that legacy continues through record displacement, predatory lending, and rising property taxes. In Washington, the Black homeownership rate has plummeted from nearly 50% in 1968 to approximately 35% today.
We are here to change that statistic.
What We Do: Our Three Pillars
1. Homeownership Preservation
We protect the “Legacy” in our name. We provide resources for homeowners facing financial challenges, rising taxes, or predatory developers. Through our Resource Directory, we connect you with property tax exemptions, foreclosure prevention, and home repair assistance.
2. Community Building & Networking
Displacement thrives in isolation. We bring homeowners together to share information, foster mutual support, and advocate for policy changes. Our monthly Meetups at the McKinney Center are the heart of this movement.
3. Resources for Homebuyers
We are building the next generation of legacy homeowners. By partnering with the Black Home Initiative, we offer pathways to ownership through education, financial counseling, and down payment assistance.
